What is going on during the ovulation phase of your cycle?
-
Typically occurs on days 12-16 of your cycle on average (again this will be unique to you)
-
Estrogen is peaking, an egg is released.
-
Liver supporting foods- Berries, Beets, Cruciferous vegetables, Grapefruit, Nuts, Fish
-
Focus on light but nourishing foods- Eggs, lentils, & dark leafy greens.
-
Workouts- HIIT, Bootcamp if that is your style of workouts are best around the ovulation phase. This is the time you often have the most energy.
Note if you have endometriosis ovulation can be a painful time so monitoring your workouts accordingly in this phase is key.
Pranayama for the Ovulation Phase
Pranayama for the ovulation phase of your menstrual cycle. This is the time when pitta is at it’s peak so you might feel extra heat in the body. A great practice to stay grounded, reduce intensity in the body & mind try sheetkari.
This breathwork is typically easier to do than sheetali for those who can’t roll your tongues.
Find a comfortable seated position. Place the tip of your tongue on the rough of your mouth. Keep the teeth together and form a smile take an inhale through the teeth and exhale through your nose. It sounds like a hissing snake.
Benefits of sheetkari
Cooling effects on the body
Relaxes the body & mind
Removes hunger, thirsty & sleep
Good for health of teeth & gums
Give it a try next time you’re in need of a calming and cooling breathwork.
Ayurvedic approach to ovulation phase
Ayurvedic approach to the ovulation phase of your cycle.
This is a time pitta starts to rise in the body and continues to rise through the luteal phase. Often we notice the imbalances showing up in the late luteal phase as crankiness, anger, PMS, and general criticism of self & others at this time.
If you can try and balance your pitta during ovulation you will have a smoother transition throughout the luteal phase.
At this time focus on:
- Self-Care- what things make you feel grounded, and connected to your inner wisdom. Make sure you make space for you during ovulation. It’s easy to over schedule yourself because you feel great which can leave you feeling like crap late luteal.
- Nasya- For those who feel those intense anger, irritability and judgement and you get stuck in your head mentally or prone to headaches nasya is a practice for you. It balances the energy in the head which in turn will help balance your body. Avoid this practice during the bleeding phase.
- Breast Massage- For those who suffer from tender breasts during the premenstrual period breast massages can be helpful. They help move the lymph and can make the premenstrual period a little less uncomfortable if your prone to breast tenderness at that time.
Yoga for the Ovulation phase
Yoga during the ovulation time is a great time to check-in with your pitta dosha.
Poses that reduce pitta are:
Forward Bends
Backbends
Twists
Extensions
Here are 5 poses that you can sprinkle into your practice during this time.
Bow Pose
Standing or seated forward fold
Bridge Pose with chest opener
Reclined twist of your choice
Cat/cow
What are you favorite yoga poses to help pacify the pitta dosha?
Gems
This practice comes from my Divine Body Wisdom book and is great for the Fall season during the ovulation phase.
The pitta dosha is predominant during this time and you might have more fire and intensity building up in your body. To make sure you’re not only staying grounded with the season but cooling the edge off the sharper pitta energy, use healing gems in your meditation practice, placing them on your desk, in your kitchen or even in your pockets.
What are cooling gems?
Pearls
Amethyst
Moonstone
Emerald
Clear Quartz
If you don’t have any crystals and don’t feel the need to purchase any, I’m a big fan of finding a rock outside that is calling to you. That can also be a wonderful tool to use to help restore the mind, body soul connection.
