Ayurvedic Approach to Menstrual Cycle

Ayurveda is an ancient system of natural healing that originated in India and has been practiced for thousands of years. It is based on the belief that good health is achieved through a balance of the body, mind, and spirit, and it incorporates a variety of therapies and techniques to promote overall well-being. In Ayurveda, the menstrual cycle is seen as an integral part of a woman's health and well-being, and there are many Ayurvedic practices that can be helpful in supporting the body during this time.
One of the key principles of Ayurveda is the concept of doshas, which are energies that govern different aspects of the body and mind. There are three doshas – vata, pitta, and kapha – and each person has a unique combination of these energies. The menstrual cycle is believed to be influenced by the vata dosha, which is associated with movement, change, and communication.
According to Ayurveda, the menstrual cycle is a time when the vata dosha is particularly active, and it is important to maintain a balance of this energy to promote good health and well-being. Some Ayurvedic practices that can be helpful for supporting the menstrual cycle include:
  • Eating a nourishing diet that is rich in fresh, whole foods and avoiding processed or refined foods
  • Engaging in regular physical activity to support healthy circulation and digestion
  • Practicing stress-reducing techniques such as meditation or yoga
  • Using herbs and other natural remedies to support the body during this time
It is also important to pay attention to any physical or emotional symptoms that may arise during the menstrual cycle, as these can be indicators of imbalances in the body. Some common symptoms that may be experienced during this time include cramping, bloating, mood changes, and fatigue. Ayurveda offers a variety of natural remedies and therapies that can be helpful in managing these symptoms, including herbs, massage, and lifestyle changes.

The Doshas

Vata Menstrual Cycle

  • Bring in more Warmth, Heavy, Nourishment & Stability

3 Tips of where to start

  1. Bring in more healthy fats -Eat more warm foods, oily and mushy foods
  2. Bring warmth to the pelvis (constriction from dryness and cold) - hot water bottle packs, ginger tea brings downward movement, warms the body and promotes grounding - start drinking 4 days before you bleed
  3. Stability- Good Daily routine

Pitta Menstrual Cycle

  • Bring in more Coolness, softness & Grounding

3 Tips of where to start

  1. Food with less spicy & oily (it spreads & augments pitta)
  2. Decrease Stress- work on letting go, pranayama, realistic goals that still make them satisfied
  3. Decrease inflammation (remove sugar, alcohol, gluten & dairy for a period of time to see how you feel)

Kapha Menstrual Cycle

  • Bring in more mobility, warmth & light

3 Tips of where to start

  1. Bring movement to the pelvis (walk, yoga, move the body)
  2. Lighter meals and spaced out meals (intermittent fasting 12-16 hours)
  3. Cook with warming Spices

Holistic Approach to your cycle

  • Follicular Phase- kapha building phase
  • Ovulation/luteal -pitta- transformation heat increases
