Ayurvedic Approach to Excess Estrogen
What does estrogen do?
- Estrogen helps play a role in ovulation. It thickens the lining of the uterus to prepare for pregnancy.
- If pregnancy occurs that follicle was first released 3 months ago so the habits and lifestyle you’ve had the past 3 months make-up that egg and potential fetus.
- Estrogen- helps with your blood flow, cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, bone and muscle mass, collagen production, moisture of the skin, brain function and many other important processes in the body.
- Estrogen is predominant in the first half of the menstrual cycle and has a second smaller peak later in the luteal phase.
What does estrogen dominance look like?
- Cyclic breast tenderness, breast cysts
- Heavy Periods
- Menstrual migraines
- Mood Swings
- Short Menstrual Cycles (less than 21 days) or shorter for you
- Fibroids
- Bloating, water retention
Estrogen Dominance - What causes it?
- What’s coming into the body? - Endocrine disruptors such as make-up, water, plastics, alcohol, caffeine.
- How well does the liver metabolize and detox things?
- Elimination- Gallbladder to bile to stool
- Excess ama (toxins or stool) clogs channels and contributes to excess estrogen
How to reduce Estrogen?
- Reduce ama (toxins in the body)
- Regular bowel movements
- Improve progesterone production
Still struggling with bowel movements?
- Triphala-1/2 tsp with warm water, let it soak 15 minutes. Take an hour before bed. Whatever taste you pickup from triphala you're missing in your diet.
- Fiber- Flaxseed powder- 2 TBsp daily.
- Loose stools- take psyllium husk- take right away.
*Don't take triphala or psyllium husk while pregnant. Only take small amounts of flaxseed powder during pregnancy.
*Excess flaxseed can lead to a decrease in testosterone in men.
How to increase progesterone
- Hugs- to support your progesterone
- Nature
- Chill out in the luteal phase
- Have love and kindness towards yourself
