Why you shouldn't do inversions on your period

We all have our attachments to stories or why we want to do something. I’ve found when I suggest to take a day or two off during your bleeding phase people have strong reactions towards. 

Inversions are another example of attachments we might have when I suggest we don’t want to during the bleeding phase. There is Ayurvedic and yogic wisdom as to why not. Often we don’t like to be told what to do and have a chip on our shoulder and say well I will show you, I do them and I’m just fine.

I had that chip on my shoulder and wore it like a badge of honor. Until I learned the actual science behind why, we don’t and if anyone has ever done an inversion while bleeding coming out of one you might have an embarrassing sound that comes out as you just interrupted the apana vayu. 

Apana Vayu is one of the 5 prana vayus. It is vital during your bleeding phase, having bowel movements, as well as when giving birth. It’s the down and out movement of energy. 

Inversions on your period

When we invert we are now making the apana vayu work harder. If you already have a vata imbalance (many people do) you are now making your own imbalance worse, which in turn can make your period problems more intense. 

It is always your choice to invert during this phase but start to notice the subtle elements in your life. Those are sometimes the small things that can be contributing to bigger problems.

I’m also the host of the Peaceful Power Podcast, where I explore how ancient wisdom meets modern life, and the author of two books on cyclical living—Divine Body Wisdom and Ayurvedic Approach to Healing Your Menstrual Cycle.

When I’m not in sacred space with clients, you can find me playing tennis, watching Hallmark mysteries, sipping my morning coffee with reverence, or adventuring on nature trails with my two boys and husband.
