Yoga for the New Moon or Menstrual Phase

During this time of either your cycle or the lunar cycle the energy tends to be lower. We tend to feel that inward pull. It's a great time to come into the darkness and tune out the noise. The new moon is the time when the sky is the darkest and we can't see her.

If you still have a regular menstrual cycle when you're bleeding it is the only time your left and right hemispheres of the brain work together. It's a good idea to look at what's working and what's not in your life.

Create Intentions

I host Wild Woman Circles on the New Moon. One of the reasons it's on the new moon is to tap into our inner wisdom. When we start to slow down you will notice you have sparks of creativity that speak to you more at different times of the month.

Now is a wonderful time to write out intentions for the upcoming lunar cycle. You can pick between 1-3 things in any area of your life that you would like to focus on and see grow as the moon does. Example- I want to practice yoga every morning for 10 minutes this next lunar cycle, I want to quit (insert whatever habit here) you want to quit, I want to only eat out once a week this next lunar cycle.

PS- the next new moon is on Sept. 6th in Virgo if you want to start thinking about what your intentions might be. I would also suggest journaling them or writing them somewhere you will see them each day so you don't forget about them.

Yoga for Menstrual Cramps

“Rest is best” is my mantra for working out during your menstrual cycle. I know though that sitting ideal is not always the easiest for many of us to do. Myself included. Taking a slow walk, or enjoying a few yin or restorative yoga poses are best at this time.

If your body is calling for movement, here is a yoga asana practice to help relieve any cramps, or just to ground the vata energy. You can hold each pose between one and five minutes. Ask your body what it is craving right now, and start with that posture.
