How do you know your meditations are working?

How Do You Know Your Meditation Is Actually Working?

Last week I talked about how I measure whether my workouts are doing anything not by the numbers, but by whether I can move through my life with more ease or if they're just adding more chaos to the pile.

The same question applies to your meditation practice.

Seriously, how do you know if it's working?

Because nobody really talks about this. We're told to meditate, we sit down, we try to quiet our brain, we fail a little, we try again. And then... we just hope something is happening. But it doesn't always feel like anything is happening.

Here's what I've figured out after years of practicing and teaching this stuff: meditation almost never announces itself with some big dramatic moment of peace. It's rarely a lightning bolt of clarity (though those do happen and they're cool when they do).

Most of the time, it's quieter than that.

It shows up in the pause before you snap at someone and you catch yourself. It shows up in a hard conversation you move through with a little more grace than you expected. It shows up in the moment you realize  oh, I'm not as wrecked by that as I would have been six months ago.

The proof isn't on your cushion. It's in your life.

I was running on a trail recently and I just blew through a cloud of gnats without breaking stride didn't stop, didn't spiral, just kept going. And I thought: that's fitness. That's what training actually looks like in real life. Meditation works the same way. You don't see it in the sitting. You see it in how you handle the swarms.

So here's your check-in for this week:

Where are you noticing more space between a trigger and your reaction? Are you sleeping differently, breathing differently? Do you feel a little less at the mercy of your own mind?

Those are the signs. Those are the clues worth paying attention to.
