Faith, Fear & the Mat: My Response to “Is Yoga Christian?
I was scrolling through threads and I saw this question, and the author was open to hearing actual responses that is why I responded- As a christian is it acceptable to do yoga?
Normally I don't engage with content like this as there is so much of that nowadays but she seemed genuinely interested. Here was my response.
My question would be if you are concerned yoga will make you lose your Christian faith, how strong is your faith? Yoga can be a tool to deepen your faith and connects you to the divine. What divine? That is up to you.
Honoring the Question
-
This question comes from real concern, and I understand that.
-
Share the common line you hear: "As a Christian, is it okay to do yoga?"
-
I don’t identify as a devout Christian anymore. But I still walk closely with Jesus. And my spirituality is deeply rooted in the earth, the body, and the cycles of nature.
My Personal Journey
-
Christianity shaped me—but I've evolved.
-
I witnessed Christian nationalism and fear-based thinking take over. I chose not to follow that path.
-
Jesus remains a teacher, guide, and sacred presence for me—but so does Mother Nature, my own body, and the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda and yoga.
-
"I didn’t lose my faith—I reclaimed it in a form that feels more honest, loving, and embodied.”
Yoga ≠ Worship
Common misconceptions:
-
“Yoga is a Hindu practice” — Yes, it originates from Indian traditions. But practicing yoga today is not the same as converting to a religion. It’s like learning martial arts or using mindfulness. It is not a religion.
-
“You’re worshipping Hindu gods” — No. Some poses are named after gods (just like days of the week are named after Roman gods), but that doesn't mean we worship them.
-
“Isn’t yoga spiritual?” — Yes, and that’s the gift. Spiritual doesn’t have to mean religious. It can mean connection: to self, earth, breath, Source.
"Yoga doesn’t require me to abandon Jesus. It simply invites me to expand how I experience the Divine—within myself and around me.”
Your Truth: A Living, Earth-Based Faith
-
Mama Gaia, my sense of God in nature, in the seasons, in birth, death, stillness, and breath.
-
The Divine for you is not in a building—it’s in your body, in community, in sacred slowness, in ritual.
-
Yoga is a pathway back to that. It teaches presence, reverence, and wholeness.
-
You don’t need a middleman to connect with God.
If you’ve ever felt afraid to explore practices outside your religion, I see you. And I invite you to trust your soul’s curiosity.
This isn’t about replacing one belief system with another—it’s about returning to your own truth, your own knowing. The sacred is in your cells, in the soil, and in your ability to question, shift, and stay rooted in love.
