Finding a Deeper Layer of You
This is a topic that pulls right at my heartstrings. Finding deeper, and deeper layers of yourself. I have been on a path to learn, absorb, embody various wellness practices through the years. I find that the more I invest in the things that are interesting to me they always pay off in finding new depths of who I am.
For myself it started in college I was a double major and double minor. I added religion as a minor because I enjoyed taking and learning the religion classes that I ended up having enough classes to minor in it without that being my intention. I really enjoyed learning.
That has continued into my adult life. I took my 230 hour yoga teacher training in 2014. I wanted to know more about yoga and what I was practicing. I loved it! I then went into Ayurveda school for 3 years where I transformed my life.
This year I'm investing in my 500 hour yoga teacher training. I wasn't intending to do that but it was a calling. Last year I didn't do a super in-depth program or skill learning and this felt like the right time to go deep with something I knew I wanted to do at some point in my life.
With every investment in a coaching program I've grown. I find out new things about myself, new interests, hobbies, and sides of myself.
Where do you start?
What do you like to do?
I think for many of us that is a question we don't always know the answer to. What do you like to do for fun? What gives you joy? Is there anyway you can go deeper with that joy, or program? Write down 50 things you enjoy doing. This was an activity I did at a new moon circle. I then had everyone circle 10 things they could add into their life that month. Next schedule those things into your calendar. Make this an activity that can practically be done. If you want to start painting find an online Zoom class, if you want to become a yoga teacher, look at yoga teacher trainings. Sometimes those things we like to do are easier to grasp then we realize.
Who am I?
Asking yourself this question and not giving the generic answer of wife, mom, insert your job description here. Go deeper who are you? What does that even mean? This can be a free writing activity for 5 minutes. Keep writing whatever comes to mind. Daughter, wife, your career might come out but so will other things. Kind, compassionate, giver. Look for the threads after the 5 minutes is up to get a clearer picture on who you think you are.
Spend time with yourself
Truly this is the number one way to get to know yourself. Be alone. I personally go out into the woods. I walk for 8 miles a few times a week. That is how I feel most connected to my inner nudges, what I want for my life, and if I'm on that path. How can you carve out time in your day to spend some solo time with yourself?
What did you used to enjoy as a kid?
Sometimes it's the forgotten dreams we had as a child. Myself I wanted to be a teacher. Which I am just not in the classroom setting. I found that wasn't the calling but teaching yoga, Ayurveda, wellness practices is. What dream did you have but maybe forgot about or maybe you wanted to be a nurse, but western medicine isn't feeling right anymore but herbal medicine is calling to you. I would argue those are both healing practices. Maybe your path said one thing doesn't mean it can look a shade different and you are still on it.
What feels scary to tell others
Usually it's the people closest to us that we get sacred to tell the really deep things. Here is what I actually believe to be true about my religious beliefs, or you want to quit your job and start a craft business, or your tired of being the perfectionist when that's not innately who you are. You want to let your hair down and get a little wild.
