How to workout with your cycle
I shared a few weeks ago about how I was working out with my cycle, and I had a ton of people wanting to know more. I know not everyone has a monthly cycle so I’ve included the lunar guide in the post as well. If not having a regular cycle follow the lunar guide. Think of this as your starter guide, not the whole textbook 😉
Ovulation or full moon time- energy should be the highest at this time of the month. It’s a great time to do HIIT workouts, bootcamp classes, intense spin classes, intervals or the hard core workout classes that you just love, or love to hate 💁🏼♀️ This phase is shorter and lasts between 3-5 days.
Luteal phase or waning moon time- at the start of the luteal phase your energy should be higher but slowly starts to wane as you get closer to your menstrual cycle or the new moon time is coming. I found I can usually start the week with my harder workouts and heavy strength training workouts. As the week goes on I slowly start to lose energy and if you feel that shift as well you can still do a weight lifting session. This might be where you focus on a certain body part, or just do a bodyweight workout. You could also head to a yoga flow class, or just take a walk outside. This phase is usually longer and can be anywhere from 10-14 days.
Menstrual phase or new moon time- it’s time to slow down. Usually the energy is lower, you don’t feel as talkative or communicative as you were the past few weeks. It’s a perfect time to go to a restorative yoga class, go for a walk outside, or just rest. Depending on your energy this will vary but taking it easy for those 3-7 days.
Follicular phase or waxing moon time- your energy starts to slowly increase and you might feel adventurous and wanting to try something new. Cardio, dancing, yoga flow, strength training for the booty and core. Think a fun flow, creative workout. As you get closer to ovulation you might start throwing in those HIIT workouts again to burn off some of the pent up energy your body might have. This phase can be anywhere from 7-10 days.
I can say from personal experience this is another layer to really listen to your body. You might be thinking this sounds like work which it is, but I’ve found so many women I work with come to me exhausted. Instead of working against our bodies trying to incorporate a more cyclical approach to our workouts makes sense to me!
Let me know if you’re going to try working out with your cycle or the moon or if you’ve been doing this for years!
