As summer heats up, many of us feel the pressure to do more, move faster, and make the most of the sunshine. But what if this season wasn’t about pushing harder — and instead about softening into rhythm with nature?
According to Ayurveda, summer is ruled by the pitta dosha — made of fire and water. It brings intensity, brightness, transformation… and sometimes burnout, inflammation, or irritability if left unchecked.
If you’re craving more ease, more connection to yourself, and a rhythm that honors your body — these simple Ayurvedic rituals can help you cool down and come home to your own inner summer.
Start Your Day with a Cooling Breath + Mantra
One of my favorite daily rituals this time of year is Sheetali Pranayama, or Cooling Breath. This breath helps reduce internal heat, soothe the nervous system, and create a calm, centered start to the day.
How to practice:
-
Sit comfortably in the morning before the heat of the day rises.
-
Curl your tongue like a straw (or purse your lips if you can’t roll it).
-
Inhale through the curled tongue or lips.
-
Exhale through your nose.
-
Repeat for 8–10 rounds.
-
Follow with this mantra or affirmation:
“I honor my inner fire and invite in balance.”
This breath practice is simple but deeply effective — especially when paired with a slow, mindful start to your morning.
A Nourishing Summer Recipe: Cucumber Coconut Bowl
One of the best ways to cool pitta is through your diet — think fresh, hydrating, sweet, and bitter foods. This Cucumber Coconut Summer Bowl is a quick lunch or light dinner I love to enjoy outdoors when possible.
Ingredients:
-
1 cucumber, chopped
-
1 cup cooked basmati rice or quinoa
-
¼ cup unsweetened shredded coconut
-
½ avocado, cubed
-
Handful of fresh cilantro or mint
-
Juice of ½ lime
-
1 tsp sunflower or coconut oil
-
Sea salt to taste
-
Optional: sunflower seeds or soaked mung beans for protein
Instructions:
-
Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
-
Let sit for 5 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
-
Enjoy slowly and with gratitude.
This bowl is pacifying for pitta, deeply hydrating, and easy on the digestive fire during these hotter months.
