Kids in Nature Activities

Activities in nature with kids!

While on our weekly 8 mile walk a woman asked how does he keep busy the entire time? We have been doing between 6-10 miles 2-3x a week since April on our favorite nature trail. It’s pretty quiet during the week and I let him play at the small playground when we finish our walk. But I thought I would share a few ideas on how I keep him busy. Since we do walk it often and he’s an only child he’s pretty good at entertaining himself but here are a few other ideas to entertain kiddos when they get restless on long walks. We do a hybrid model of stroller and walking for him. ⁣

✨Teach him the name of flowers or trees⁣

✨ABC in nature - go through the alphabet and find as many things that start with each letter that you can.⁣

✨Nature card game- my mom bought us a deck of nature cards with descriptive words on them he finds something that matches the card.⁣

✨We look for Winnie the Pooh and friends houses in the woods.⁣

✨He brings a pack back of toys for the day he might want to play with.⁣

✨Snacks, lots of snacks and the occasional we will get ice cream if you just hang on one more mile 🤷🏼‍♀️⁣

✨Run- I tell him to run to a sign, or a tree until I get there.⁣

✨Nap- Somedays he naps if he’s tired.⁣

✨Take photos- he loves to take photos and poses me for them as well.⁣

✨Find the perfect walking stick⁣

✨Find rocks for his rock collection ⁣

✨Play tag- Somedays we play tag on the trail. ⁣

✨Very very rarely I give him my phone, it’s only happened twice in 4 months. Plus there is no service a good chunk of the walk.⁣

Do you have something you like to do with your kiddos on a walk to entertain them? Let me know I would love to hear new ideas!⁣ Send me a DM on Instagram!
