Ayurvedic Fall Practices

During the fall season vata is the dominant dosha. In balance vata dosha looks creative, has tons of ideas, enthusiastic, and are inspiring. Out of balance it looks like scattered, flighty, indecisive, fast talking & moving.

These 3 practices can be done in the Fall to help you stay grounded, nourished and feel supported in your daily practices. Routines are the name of the game in the fall season.

Sit In Nature

The gorgeous colors of the Autumn season are something to witness each Autumn. It’s a perfect backdrop for a meditation sitting on mama earth. In Ayurveda menstruation is associated with the apana vayu. Which means the downward flow. Naturally when you’re bleeding you want to release the uterine lining. A great mudra to practice while sitting in nature is apana mudra.

You will place your thumb, middle & ring finger together, and extend your pinky & index finger forwards. Place the back of your hands on your upper thighs. As you breath in focus on releasing the pelvic floor, relaxing your low belly. As you breath in pull energy up from the earth through the base of your spine landing at your heart space. Once more on your exhale focus on releasing that which no longer serves you, on your inhale pulling from Mama Gaia that which can support you.

Lunar Wisdom

Use the energy of a warmer Autumn night to enjoy a full moon bathing experience. This might require you to stay up a little later one evening maybe the harvest moon which is the first full moon of Autumn. Make an evening of it. Create a bonfire, practice moon salutations outside, invite a few friends over to howl at the moon. Release any inhibitions. You might also use this time to write down 1-2 things you want to release this full moon cycle on a sheet of paper. Say them aloud and throw them in your burning fire to signify releasing that which no longer serves you.

Enjoy an evening outside before the winter arrives. Take the time to truly celebrate and embrace the season. You might even set intentions for the Autumn season. What would you like to see happen this Autumn? How can you embrace the energetic shifts? How can you slow yourself down to notice the changes occurring? You might even craft your ideal daily and morning schedule during this time as well.

Healing Gems

In the ovulation phase of your cycle the pitta dosha is predominant. Meaning you might have more fire, intensity to make sure you’re not only staying grounded with the season but cooling the edge off the sharper pitta energy.

Using healing gems in your mediation practice, placing them on your desk, in your kitchen, your pants pockets to help you stay cool. Here are a few cooling gems when you feel a bit intense, aggressive, judgmental, or sharp of tongue. Pearls, amethyst, moonstone, emerald and clear quartz. If you don’t have any crystals and don’t feel the need to purchase any I’m a big fan of finding a rock outside that is speaking to you. That can be a wonderful tool to use to help you restore in mind and body as well.
